Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, is undergoing its annual facelift as Phoenix's baseball team begins spring training.
"It's the first sign that baseball season is right around the corner," head groundskeeper Grant Trenbeath said.
Crews cleaned the dirt off the retractable roof earlier this month and stripped the grass off the field. Trenbeath said a lot of fans don't realize that the sod is replaced at Chase Field every year.
Sergio Garcia showed extraordinary act of sportsmanship against Rickie Fowler which ultimately cost him a spot in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship at Dove Mountain.
In a remarkable incident Garcia had needed a drop away from a colony of bees on the edge of the sixth green, where he was heard saying to the rules official: "I don't want to hit the shot, I've had bad experiences with bees."
And clearly feeling that he had taken too long to play his second shot, Garcia then offered Fowler a half on the next hole, despite the Spaniard facing five feet for par and Fowler more than three times that distance. Read the full story.
Mid-February marks the beginning of prime spring planting time in the Phoenix area. High temperatures have been in the eighties the last few days, which is a bit warm for our normal February weather, but we're not likely to see freezing temperatures again this year. We planted yellow, zucchini, and acorn squash, cantaloupe and honeydew melons, and Armenian cucumbers in this bed. In another bed, which most recently hosted broccoli, we set out three more tomato transplants- Early Girl, Yellow Pear, and Purple Cherokee. I also found a spot for a new basil plant in a third bed.
